  • 8tracks (and then some) of goodness

Now that muxtape has morphed in to a portal for bands, a fair few different sites have tried to replace it with similar mixtape style functionality. In my humble opinion the best so far is 8tracks. A nice clean interface, simple concept and some brilliant mixes by it’s users with high quality audio. They look to be a bit more prepared than muxtape (I think a lot of sites learned from the mistakes muxtape made) so hopefully it’ll be around for while. Here’s my first attempt at an 8tracks ‘mixtape’:

    Tracklisting:

    Juno – High Noon
    Vienna Teng – Idioteque
The Black Keys – I’m Glad
    M. Ward – Let’s Dance
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. – Without You
Ryan Adams – Times Like These
    The Dismemberment Plan – Crush
    Jeff Buckley – Satisfied Mind
Antony & The Jonsons – Knockin’ On Heavens Door
    A Camp – I Can Buy You
    Sparklehorse – Shade And Honey
    Cake – I Will Survive
    Cat Power – New York

If you post your own, let me know. Should have a couple of TM originals ready for you soon too…

  • “Hiiiiiiiiiggghhhh…as a kite…”

I don’t really know why, but I love this:

And a great Family Guy mini version.

  • Ghostly Swim

I realise this is probably pretty old to some people now but a little while back the brilliant [adultswim] posted a free compilation of stuff from the Ghostly International record label, and it’s a really quite brilliant little compilation. And Free! Here’s the player Sorry, the player auto-playing whenever you go to the site annoid me. Here’s the first track instead:

    Michna – Triple chrome dipped

The whole lot can be downloaded from here.

  • “Said I’ve seen your picture on a $100 bill…”

5 years ago, Elliott Smith died. His death is probably the only ‘celebrity’ death where I can say I know exactly where I was and what I was doing when I found out (putting out CDs in hight street ‘music retailer’). For better or for worse, he was is one of my favourite song writers and his music has meant a lot to me over the years. Here’s a short article from the LAist on his life from SPIN.com on the circumstances leading up to his death.
    Cheers for the music Elliott.

Elliott Smith – Angeles (from the album Either/Or)

  • Gnarls Barkley: Going On

    Great song, cool video.
